How to Reach Cala Mariolu

Cala Mariolu is considered by many the most beautiful beach in Italy and perhaps the Mediterranean. Its polished white pebbles, waters shifting from emerald green to cobalt blue, and the limestone cliffs surrounding it make it a place that literally takes your breath away at first sight.

There is however an aspect that makes it even more special: Cala Mariolu cannot be reached by car and has limited access. There is no road leading directly there — and paradoxically, that is its fortune: remaining relatively unspoiled and away from mass tourism.

Where Is Cala Mariolu?

Cala Mariolu is in the Gulf of Orosei, on Sardinia's central-eastern coast, within the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu National Park. Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Baunei, province of Nuoro.

The nearest logistical reference point is Cala Gonone, the seaside hamlet of Dorgali, from where most boat excursions depart.

How to Reach Cala Mariolu by Boat – The Easiest Way

The boat is by far the most common and convenient way to reach Cala Mariolu. From Cala Gonone harbour, numerous vessels depart every morning for the gulf's coves. The journey takes about 40–50 minutes depending on the vessel and sea conditions.

Available tour types:

• Multi-cove day tour: visit Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Biriola and Cala Mariolu in one day, with stops for swimming and snorkeling. Duration: 6–8 hours. The most popular option.
• Dedicated tour (2–3 coves): more time at Cala Mariolu, more relaxed pace.
• Private charter: for groups or families wanting maximum flexibility and privacy.

Practical tips:

• Book at least 48 hours in advance in July and August — places fill up quickly.
• Arrive at the harbour 15/20 minutes early.
• Bring water shoes: Cala Mariolu's pebbles are beautiful but slippery.
• If you suffer from seasickness, a fast dinghy reduces time in open sea.

How to Reach Cala Mariolu on Foot – Trekking

For those who love walking and want a more adventurous experience, Cala Mariolu can be reached on foot via Supramonte trails. Be warned: this is not a stroll.

The most accessible route starts from Rifugio Genna Silana, reachable by car from the SS125 between Baunei and Dorgali. From there you descend towards the coast through limestone rocks and Mediterranean scrub.

• Difficulty: Medium/High
• Duration: 3/4 hours one way
• Elevation: about –900 m (down) / +900 m (return)

Sea kayaking is an increasingly popular option for exploring the Gulf of Orosei. From Cala Gonone, paddle along the coast with the chance to discover small sea caves and coves inaccessible to boats.

Suitable for those with sea kayaking experience and good fitness. Several operators in Cala Gonone offer kayak rental and guided tours.

What to Expect at Cala Mariolu

Cala Mariolu has no umbrellas, sunbeds or services of any kind — and that is precisely what makes it special. The white pebbles reflect light uniquely. The water is deep almost immediately, so it is not suitable for small children who cannot swim.

Snorkeling is spectacular: rocky seabeds, posidonia and colourful fish with visibility often exceeding 15/20 metres.
